Fox and Scarletflare stretched in the early morning sunlight streaming through their new den. They exchanged pleasant talk, but not so much as to mention the happenings of the last day.
Suddenly, while they talked mildly, a shadow blocked the sun. Scarletflare hadn't seen it, she was looking the wrong way, but Fox had.
A split-second after the shadow, Mur came charging in, alone, pelt matted, teeth bared, claws sharp. She leaped towards Scarletflare, snarling, "If I need to get revenge on you, it will be more effective to hurt HER!"
"No!" Fox yowled, then stood between his mate and the rogue.
Scarletflare's eyes went wide with shock, terror, and grief. Fox would die for her, she thought.

Stepping Stones
“I bet you can't catch me!” shouted Dakota. Dakota Carol and Ava Straub were
playing tag in Ava's mother's garden on some stepping stones.
Dakota Carol was a girl of hidden talent and science. Everything that happened
had a reason and that reason was science. She had won every science fair since
kindergarten. Living as an only child with her mom meant that she barely had
any friends. The dark haired girl had just met Ava a year ago. It had been
non-stop play from then on, which Dakota was glad for.
Ava Straub had auburn hair and was very creative. Ideas popped into her head on
a daily basis, and she was always trying to get Dakota to help her out with them.
The girl had been somewhat of a loner until she met Dakota. Ava was known for
her crazy thoughts and the other kids at her school backed off from her. It got
even worse when she ruined a second grade poster; she had got the idea that
using MORE water in watercolors would make the drawings look better. It ended
up as a runny mess.
“TAG!” shouted Ava as she tagged Dakota.
Dakota whirled around and chased after Ava who had ran under the patio or, as
the girls called it, ‘The Tunnel’. Suddenly she felt different and stopped. The
air was crisper, her bare feet felt the soggy ground which defiantly hadn’t
been wet just seconds before.
“Ava, I don’t think we’re in Texas anymore,” she called after her friend, her
voice echoing in The Tunnel, which was still there.
Ava scoffed, “I highly, highly doubt that Miss. Dorothy.” She turned around to
face Dakota.
“No, look. The scenery, it’s different. I mean, were there bright purple
flowers in your garden? No. Were there dark green bushes? No.”
"Then where do you suppose we are, Narnia?" mocked Ava.
"Yes. I do actually," Dakota remarked.
"I was joking," Ava said, slapping her palm to her forehead.
Dakota ran out to go look at the new world. It was so different from the tame
garden they had just been in. It was like a ‘before and after shot’, the only
thing the same was the ground, rocks were scattered everywhere just as they had
been at Ava’s.
Scarcely after Dakota had taken a few steps, Ava suddenly threw a rock and
shouted "OWL!"
"What the heck was that?" Dakota yelled at her friend.
"Sorry, force of habit," Ava said sheepishly.
"Oh I get it, back at home you throw rocks at owls all the time,"
Dakota said tapping her foot impatiently.
"Ha ha!" laugh Ava, "Anyways, as to us being in a ‘different
world’, I think that someone pulled a prank on us or that we are just
dreaming.”
Dakota ignored her friend and ran out further.
Ava groaned and stomped her feet as she followed.
"DAKOTA LOOK OUT FOR THAT HOLE," screamed Ava!
"what hol-," Dakota asked falling into the hole.
Ava ran over to the hole and looked down.
"ouch, I think I sprained my ankle," moaned Dakota who sounded like a
echo.
"Can you walk," Ava asked worriedly.
But Dakota didn't responded. Ava looked around desperately.
Suddenly something caught her eye. She walked over and saw a girl about 16.
"hi," Ava said cautiously.
"your friend fell into the hole didn't she," the
girl asked looking at the hole.
Ava looked back at the big gap in the ground and replied
"yes, yes she did."
"I'm Jane by the way," the girl said standing up.
"I'm Ava," said Ava
The two girls walked over to the hole and looked down.
Meanwhile Dakota was completely alone or so she thought.
"H-hello," Dakota called
"I'm here," said a manly voice.
Dakota stood up but immediately sat back down for the pain
in her was blinding.
"Don't try to stand, sprained your foot pretty
badly," said the voice "I'm Ash."
"I'm Dakota."
As Dakota's eyes grew used to the dim light she saw a boy
about a year or so older than her with dusty brown hair and deep turquoise eyes
that seemed blanketed with worry. He
walk into a little tunnel that seemed to be pitch black. When he came back out
he had a wood splint.
"my sister made it for me when I fell in to get
her," he said putting the splint on her leg.
"Is she here," Dakota asked rubbing her foot?
"yeah," Ash said looking back up into her icy blue
eyes.
He helped her get up and hop into that he had been in
before. When she had half walked half hopped for about 5 minutes he set her
down on a rock. Another person walked in. Dakota realized it was a girl. She
looked exactly like Ash except she had caramel hair.
"I'm Wisp," said the girl.
Ava looked a Jane deeply for the first time. She had light
brown hair with hazel eyes. Not much to her anywhere else.
"So... do you live here," Ava asked.
"No." Jane said not looking away from the deep
chasm
"I'm so sorry," she whispered to Jane.
Jane just nodded and continued to look down. Suddenly she
pulled out a bow and arrow and pointed it at the woods. Ava stared where it was
pointed till suddenly she saw in the dim forest 2 blood red eyes. She heard a TWING
and the eyes disappeared. She heard a thump. Jane walked over to where the noise had been coming from.
She returned with a tiger in her hand. Jane stared at Ava then handed her the
bow and arrow. Ava stared at it and looked a Jane.
"If you trust in
it you will never miss," Jane said looking her sincerely.
Ava pulled the string on the. She stared at Jane and smiled,
though in side she had no real intention of using the bow for she did not know
how to use one.
"I have an idea, "she said lightbulbing.
She grabbed the random piece of string in her pocket (since
she was Ava, of course) and threw it down the hole.
Ash ran out of the
small room.
"Who's up there." she heard him call.
She hear another voice which was to faint for her to hear.
"What, I can barely hear you?" Ash called back.
There was quiet for a second then Ash bustled back in and
grabbing Wisp's hand he said
"We will be right back, I need someone with good ears
to here this."
So they left. Dakota waited impatiently. Then she hear
Wisp's voice cry
"We need help to get out, can you help us?"
Then there was an answer which, again, was to quiet for her
ears.
"Wisp, quickly go help Dakota." she heard Ash
whisper to Wisp. A few minutes later Wisp's presence was in the room.
Her soft, light fingers touched her as she told her
"Come, we have found our way out."
Dakota limped down the tunnel as fast as she could.
"I hope that Ava
is ok," she thought hopefully
"Maybe she's the one who is
up there waiting to help us!"
Once they got into the slim light the opening of the hole
let in she look up and saw two little dots there.
"Those girls are going to let downs some rope to let us
up" Ash explained as the dots moved away.
They waited anxiously
waited till the light grew dimmer and finally the rope came down.
"Ok, Wisp you first then I will carry Dakota up."
he ordered.
Wisp nodded and tied the rope around her small waist and tugged. She was lifted
up and soon disappeared into the outside world. The rope was soon sent back down and ask wrapped it around himself.
"Help me out ok when I say ,jump, hop off your one good
foot and I'll catch you, ok?" He told her looking up.
"I guess." she replied.
"JUMP!" Ash called.
She sprang nimbly off her foot and landed in his arms.
"That. Was. Awesome." he scoffed amazed.
She looked into his deep blue eyes and smiled. After what
seemed a lifetime they were out of the dark hole. She was blinded by the light
and covered her eyes. She felt someone touch her.
"Now, do you believe we are in Narnia?" the voice
asked.
Dakota's hands flew away from her face.
"Ava!" she cried happily.
The girls embraced.
Ave was so happy to see her friend again. Jane stood a
little off tapping her foot.
"Dakota, I want you to meet my friend Jane." she
introduced.
Jane smiled warmly and said
"Hi, Ava told me a lot about you."
Dakota smiled and said
"These are my friends Ash, and Wisp Black"
The Blacks smiled and waved. Dakota then fixed her icy gaze
of Ava's shoulder.
"Oh, that is my bow and arrow, Jane gave it to
me." she told her friends confused face.
She looked down and saw her friends splint.
"What happened?" she asked
"I sprained my foot in the fall." she explained.
After that the group started to set up camp. Ash set a fire
and they all watched it flicker and glow.
"We should keep watch." Ash said as if in charge.
Everyone nodded, Jane twitched.
"I'll keep first watch." Ava offered.
"Ok, I'll take over your duty at midnight." Ash
said nodding at Ava "Then I'll wake up Dakota."
Everyone seemed pleased, except for Jane , so Ava when to the edge of the light.
Around 9:00, according to her watch any ways, she wrapped
her arms around herself, the fire that had once been warming now barely a
flicker. Ava suddenly heard a noise in the bushes. She drew her bow and knocked
and arrow and called
"Who's out there."
Dakota's eyes flew open. She waited and listened. She knew
something was wrong. So, she quietly stood and stepped over Ash and Wisp. She
smelt ash and soot but, something else.
"Ava, what's going on?" she whisper called.
No reply. Dakota wrung her hands worriedly. She turned
around and walked towards the watching place. There she didn't see anything
suspicious. Then see walked towards where Ava sat.
She was standing with her bow knocked, then Dakota heard
something. She walked towards Ava,
"What was that noise?" she whispered into her
friends ear.
Ava didn't move.
"I don't know, maybe I should go check." she
replied barely moving her lips.
"No I'll do it." Dakota told her "You, wake
you the others."
She walk quietly towards they bush. Suddenly out jumped an
old man yelling
'I've caught ya' I've caught ya' this time!"
Dakota was relived as she watched him jump with join. He
stopped and she looked at him. He had a beard like Dumbledore's from Harry
Potter, the top of his head was bald, had on some old brown overalls, and his
eyes were piercingly green.
"What's going on?" a sleepy voice she identified
as Wisps sounded.
The others crowded around to see the short man.
"Ha ha ha… err… all skiddymouse." shouted to old
man "You ain't no wolf heard ow are ya'… I didn't think so! What'd ya'
think you were doin'? Tonights the night of the ol' wolf pack! You made me lose
me chances!"
He rambled on about the wolf pack and about how they had
spoiled his chances.
"Err… old man -" Jane began.
"OLD MAN!" Shouted the man "I ANI' T OLD! My
name is Luke Cresmen, and I am a good age of 68!"
"Yeah, well… I'm Jane, err… this is Ash and Wisp Black,
that’s Ava, and the ice eyed girl," Dakota gave her a look, " that’s
Dakota." Jane told him pointing at each person as she said there name.
" I could care less!" Luke said in his thick
country voice " Why are ya' kids doing ear this time o' night? Ya' must be
crazed!"
"Oh enough!" Dakota shouted " What wolf
pack?"
Luke stared at her as though she had just grown 2 heads.
"You mean you don't know the story?" He cawed
"Well young'ns gather round for a story."
He looked around and said
"Do ya' have a tellin rock?"
"A what?" Dakota asked?
"A tellin' rock. A place where ya' tell storys?"
He explained as though they were kindergarteners.
Dakota had enough.
"Come 'ere' you little…" she said lunging at the
man. Ash rushed forward to grab her hand. She closed her eyes and said straining
"No little man we don't so sit ON THE GROUND!"
The man snorted and plopped down on the ground.
"Well, once there was a band of gentle men
